REC Networks Statement: Departure of FCC Chairwoman Jessica Rosenworcel
Over a decade of dedication focused on the consumer
Today, FCC Chair Jessica Rosenworcel had announced her departure from the FCC effective January 20, 2025 with the transfer of power. This will leave Geoffrey Starks and Anna Gomez to represent what will be the minority.
For over a decade, Jessica has been an asset to the Commission and made history as the first woman to be confirmed as Chair under the Biden Administration.
Jessica has always looked out for the consumer and under her leadership, we saw some of the most pro-consumer initiatives get adopted. Sometimes, these pro-consumer stances did conflict with what was in the best interests of the survival of small stations, such as CAP polling, which many stations are still feeling the sting from. But overall, she had the best interests of consumers in mind in a manner that was inclusive, regardless of disability and language ability. Jessica was instrumental with the attitude of “digital equity” at the agency.
I had the pleasure to meet with Jessica in DC on the REC/music industry Petition for Reconsideration on the Pai Administration’s repeal of the anti-duplication rule for FM radio, for which the repeal was reversed under her leadership. Unfortunately, the NAB has appealed that action.
Jessica was able to be a part of the best days of the LPFM service including her involvement in the enactment of the Sixth Report and Order that adopted regulations that implemented the Local Community Radio Act of 2010.
Jessica’s dedication to the Government and to the American consumer will be remembered for years to come. Her sense of leadership should be the model for Commissioners who follow in her footsteps. Thank you for your service and best of luck with whatever the future holds for you.
